STYLE ICON. Invented the sugar trap genre. All around creative genius. My favs by her are Countin’ up, Big Dick Energy, Won’t Change, Poppin’, Why oh Why, Key Lime OG, Smack a Bitch, damn they’re all so good
2. Nitty Scott
Wrote the intersectional feminist rap anthem BBYGRL, so check that out. Other great songs by her are Mango Nectar and La Diaspora, the whole Creature! album honestly, and her new single Pelo is great too.
3. Angel Haze
An actual lyrical genius and I don’t say that lightly. Every song I’ve heard by her is beyond impressive, but my favs are probably Resurrection, Werkin’ Girls, and No Limits
4. Awkwafina
Best known for NYC Bitche$ and My Vag, her remake of Micky Avalon’s My Dick, but those aren’t actually my favorites of hers. I’d check out Testify, Marijuana, and Ghost to start and go from there.
5. Saweetie
I’m sure everyone’s heard ICY GRL at this point, but what you may not know is 1. the radio edit sucks in comparison to the original and 2. her entire album (High Maintenance) is incredible. She also just dropped a new single, Pissed, that is nothing short of brilliant.
6. Kash Doll
Honestly it’s beyond my imagining that Kash Doll hasn’t blown up yet, but she’s fucking great, and her music is all about men paying women which is really the heart of practical feminism under late capitalism if you ask me. My favs by her are Run Me My Money and His & Hers
7. Leikeli47
I just got into her myself so I don’t know much about her, but so far my favs are Miss Me, Money, and Bags (I’m slowly making my way through the Wash & Set album and so far the whole thing has been fire)
8. Lizzo
BI ICON. Not strictly rap, her music is more a combo of rap, pop, R&B, and soul, but she’s so fucking good I can’t make any type of list without her. I’ve seen her in concert twice and her energy is UNREAL. I’m actually a little emotional over how much I love Lizzo so I’m just gonna cut myself off here and list my favorite tracks by her: Truth Hurts, Good as Hell, Water Me, Scuse Me, Deep, Worship, Coconut Oil, Boys, and Let ‘Em Say are all fantastic. Also she just dropped her new single Juice which might be my fav so far (and that’s REALLY saying something) so please go listen to it & bump her further up the charts where she belongs
